In a surprise move, Penn State head basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry is leaving the Nittany Lions to become the new head coach at Notre Dame. While the move has not been made official, Shrewsberry has spoken out about the impending move.
In an interview, Shrewsberry explained that the opportunity to coach in his native Indiana meant a lot to him. He said that between his experience coaching in the Hoosier State and his knowledge of Notre Dame basketball history, it’s something special for him.
“End of the day, if things are even or close to even, the chance to go back to Indiana and coach one of the major programs in the state, it means so much to me,” Shrewsberry said, via Patrick Engel of BlueAndGold.com. “I’ve coached all over the state. And I understand the history of Notre Dame basketball.”
Shrewsberry played college basketball at Hanover college and started his coaching career working at various Indiana-based colleges. His very first head coaching job was at IU-South Bend – just a stone’s throw away from Notre Dame.

Micah Shrewsberry has reportedly been offered a seven-year contract to become the new head coach at Notre Dame. He will be replacing Mike Brey, who recently resigned after becoming the winningest coach in Fighting Irish basketball history.
After leading Penn State to an improbable NCAA Tournament appearance and even more improbably First Round win over Texas A&M, Shrewsberry has established himself as one of the top coaches in the country.
Will Shrewsberry find even more success at Notre Dame?
