GAME RECAP: Pitt Panthers bounce back against Sacred Heart

Big games from Cummings and Federiko earns the Panthers a W

PITTSBURGH- Every game at home so far against non-power six conference teams has followed the same script. A first half that leaves much to be desired, followed by an absolute demolition project of a second half in which the Pittsburgh Panthers run away with the game. Last night? Last night was no different.

The Panthers (7-4) defeated Sacred Heart (5-6) 91-66, in the process crossing the 90-point threshold for the first time this season.

Multiple Panthers filled the stat sheet, but none more than G Nelly Cummings and F Frederiko Frederiko. Frederiko produced a double-double, with 17 points and 14 boards. He was one of two Panthers with a double-double tonight (Hinson).

Cummings was on fire from deep, shooting 6-12 3PT on the way to a strong 24-point, 6 rebound, 5 assist, 4 steal performance. It’s by no means shocking that when the heartbeat of the Pitt offense is cooking, they are capable of putting up the most points they have all year.

Cummings had a bigger role on account of guard Jamarius Burton’s absence as he deals with knee inflammation, and Cummings ran with the opportunity. The Colgate transfer played nearly the entire game, registering 38 minutes.

John Hugley did not start, and nor did he have much of an impact on the contest either. In 11 minutes he mustered 2 points on 1-4 shooting, as something is still clearly not quite right with Pitt’s premier big man.

Also worth noting is the play of guard Greg Elliott, who has been on fire in the last four games, scoring 18 or more points in three of those four contests. Elliott had 18 tonight and continues to cement his role as Pitt’s best shooter. (46 FG%, 41 3FG%) Elliott also had four steals, using his extremely long wingspan to disrupt Sacred Heart passing lanes.
