This is the first year of the ACC/SEC challenge and Pitt was given a nice opponent in Mizzou. The Tigers had an impressive turnaround last season going 25-10 and gaining a 7 seed in the NCAAT. They defeated Utah State before falling to cinderella Princeton in the second round. They had finished 12-21 the season before. Head coach Dennis Gates (who played for Cal in NCAAT against Pitt in 2002) is back for his second season after three successful years at Cleveland State. Last year’s Mizzou team had a ton of experience with the top 8 scorers being seniors. Gates will have a couple of those players back for one more year but the rest of the roster will have the typical mix of incoming players and transfers as well. Missouri is a skilled offensive team. Their scoring average improved from 65.5 to 78.9 in Gates’ first season at the helm so this will be a great early season test for Pitt’s defense. Both the Tigers and Panthers could find themselves on the bubble come March so this game will be a huge resume-building opportunity. As we saw last year, November and December games are just as important so hopefully Pitt can start strong and carry that momentum through the rest of the year. The game is scheduled for Tuesday, Nov 28 at 7 pm.
Hail to Pitt.
