McCutchen returns to the Pirates for a 12th season and third year in a row donning Pittsburgh’s black and yellow.
Andrew McCutchen is staying home.
On Monday, the Pittsburgh Pirates announced that Andrew McCutchen will return to the box in 2025. Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported the deal is one year for $5 million.
A franchise icon and beloved teammate in the clubhouse, McCutchen will enter his third season with the Pirates during his second stint with the club.
Strictly a DH at 38 years old, McCutchen hit .232 with 18 doubles, 20 home runs, 50 RBIs, and a .328 on-base percentage in 120 games.

McCutchen ranks fourth in Pirates history in home runs (235), fifth in walks (818) and extra-base hits (609), and sixth in RBIs (818). Clutch’s 1,578 games ranks ninth in franchise history and sits 10th with 1,667 hits.
McCutchen recorded his 2,000th hit, 1,000th walk, 400th double, and 2,000th career game two years ago and earned his 300th home run and 50th triple this past season in the black and gold.
“It was important for me and for everyone within our organization that Andrew remain in a Pirates uniform. It’s where he belongs,” owner Bob Nutting said. “In my conversations with Andrew, he made clear his strong desire to help the team in every way he can, both on the field and in the clubhouse. I am glad he is back.”
It’s a good Christmas present for Pirates fans less than 72 hours before Christmas morning.

In what could be his final season, McCutchen will likely DH and share time with other young players in the lineup to keep McCutchen fresh. It’s a worthwhile outcome with McCutchen continuing to mentor young players, take meaningful at-bats to help the Pirates win, and allow players like Henry Davis to figure it out in the majors, Bryan Reynolds get off his feet, and Joey Bart remain hitting when he’s not catching a day game after night matchup.
McCutchen will play his 12th season in Pittsburgh over a 17-year career and if this is it, Pirates fans should savor every moment of No. 22’s career.
