The Pittsburgh Pirates could have one roster spot come down to Henry Davis and Endy Rodríguez.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are inching closer to Opening Day, which means that they need to finalize their roster before the season.
A few spots are up for grabs, including the backup catcher role. MLB.com reporter Alex Stumpf delved into the competition between Henry Davis and Endy Rodriguez for the job.
Joey Bart is going to be part of the Pirates’ catching equation this year, but his Opening Day partner is still up for grabs. Henry Davis has been drilling the ball to all fields this spring, a very welcome change after becoming too pull-heavy in 2024, and Endy Rodríguez has been catching up after missing last year. The Pirates want to keep both at catcher, so there’s not a lot of positional flexibility in the decision-making process, and they both have appeal.
The Pirates drafted Davis with the No. 1 overall pick, so they are really hoping that investment turns into something.
The Buccos also like Rodríguez, and hope that he can bounce back after missing all of last year.
The final spot at catcher will likely come down to who is the hottest going into the season, which will likely be decided in the final week or so of Spring Training.
