Pirates announce plethora of roster moves to end July

The Pittsburgh Pirates made a plethora of roster moves to close the book on July.

Most notably, the Pirates activated outfielder Bryan De La Cruz and made his Pirates debut Wednesday with a 2-4 performance. The Bucs acquired De La Cruz for minor-league pitcher Jun-Seok Shim and infielder Garret Forrester.

Pittsburgh’s first Toronto utilityman Isiah Kiner-Falefa, a distant cousin of former Pirates star Ralph Kiner. Rising INF/OF prospect Charles McAdoo completed the straight one-for-one deal before the deadline.

Ben Cherington wasn’t done. The Pirates dealt lefty Martin Perez and his expiring contract to the San Diego Padres for minor league left-hander Ronaldys Jimenez.

The team agreed to terms with first-round pick Konnor Griffin one day before Thursday’s deadline on a deal worth just over $6.5 million. Pittsburgh signed 19 of 21 selections in the 2024 MLB Draft.

The ballclub activated lefty reliever Jalen Beeks following a draft with Colorado this week. Beeks pitched .2 innings and left the tying run on base for Colin Holderman, who allowed a game-winning, two-run home run to Mauricio Dubon.

Ben Cherington made 19 transactions combined between trade deadline day (July 30) and the following day to reshape the roster. Carmen Mlodzinski was transferred to the 15-day IL due to a forearm injury, opening the door for Jake Woodford to make his Pirates debut in an impressive outing.

The Pirates transferred right-hander Daulton Jefferies to the 60-day IL and placed outfielder Joshua Palacios on the 10-day IL with a hamstring injury.
