The Pittsburgh Pirates have claimed LHP Joey Wentz off waivers from the Detroit Tigers per a team announcement.
We have claimed LHP Joey Wentz off waivers from Detroit.
We will make a corresponding move on the 28-man active roster once Wentz joins the team later this week. Our 40-man roster is now full.

Wentz was the 40th overall pick in the 2016 draft out of Shawnee Mission East High School in Kansas. He debuted in 2022 as a starter, but after a 7.73 ERA in a starting role in 2023 he’s spent all of 2024 in a relief role.
The transition to the bullpen has not gone well. In 55.1 innings across 38 games in a multi-inning relief role this season the 6’5” southpaw has struck out 60 batters, but he’s also allowed 60 hits and has been below average in preventing walks with 27. Opposing hitters are torching his fastball that averages 93.8 MPH, hitting .341 off of the offering.
The team will make a corresponding move to make room on the active roster as soon as Wentz joins the team later this week. Hopefully this means we’re nearing the end of the Domingo German experiment, who never should have been here in the first place. Although I’m not too enthused about Joey Wentz either.
