The Pittsburgh Pirates did not start the season on the right foot.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are starting the season in the loss column after a 5-4 defeat at the hands of the Miami Marlins on Thursday inside loanDepot Park.
The Pirates fell behind early in the third inning when Paul Skenes ran into some traffic on the bases. A grounder brought in shortstop Xavier Edwards to score the game’s first run.
That was the only run Skenes gave up as the Buccos added two runs in the top of the fifth thanks to a Bryan Reynolds single.

The next inning saw Nick Gonzales double Pittsburgh’s run total by clearing the deck for the Pirates’ first home run of the year to make it 4-1.

Skenes exited after 5.1 innings and left runners on base for relief pitcher Dennis Santana to work around. After a pair of walks, Derek Shelton called upon Ryan Borucki to clean things up. He got out of the inning, but not before another Marlins run scored.
It was 4-2 going into the bottom of the 8th inning, but Colin Holderman struggled in his season debut, allowing the Marlins to tie the game 4-4 after a wild pitch and single from Miami.

In the 9th, David Bednar was brought in to keep the lead, but a leadoff triple from Nick Fortes put Miami in the driver’s seat, and he scored two batters later after a single from Kyle Stowers.
