It’s beginning to look a lot like a Bucco’s Christmas.
The holidays are officially upon us, and as everyone is finishing up their Christmas shopping, baseball fans are watching as their teams are making use of the winter free-agency period. Pirates fans in particular are doing just as much wishing and wanting as any other team’s fans, but will probably end up with more coal than presents. Still though, it doesn’t hurt to make some wishes, hoping for a Christmas miracle.
Make it to the postseason to redeem the ghost of Pirates Christmas past
It’s no secret that the Pirates are on a historically bad streak of luck when it comes to winning. The team has endured six straight losing seasons, with a couple of 100-loss records in that span. They’ve also not been to the playoffs since 2015. It is proven that when the Buccos are in the post-season, PNC Park can be an electric atmosphere. The die-hard and casual fans alike are starving for a winner, and just a glimpse of the team’s past would be a dream come true. One more run for Andrew McCutchen, mixed in with October Paul Skenes mowing down opposing batters, this should be on every fan’s list.

Build around an already strong rotation to appease the ghost of Pirates Christmas present
It is very possible that Pittsburgh could have a top-10 rotation in 2025. The star power of Skenes obviously speaks volumes as to how good this group can be. Couple that with another rising star in Jared Jones, some veteran leadership from Mitch Keller, plus the prospect of rookie Bubba Chandler joining the ranks is very exciting. However, all of those pitchers will be a waste if management fails to build around them and get some bats in the lineup that can help take the load off. I want to believe that Spencer Horwitz is a good step in the right direction, but it won’t be enough. The team needs to invest more in it’s offense this winter to ensure that the primes of these great pitchers isn’t spent in another losing affair. Please, please, please deliver on some offense this holiday season.
May Bob Nutting sell the team to protect the ghost of Pirates Christmas yet to come
The ultimate dream, the ultimate wish for any Pirates fan is that the worst owner in sports, Bob Nutting, will sell the team and finally set us all free of the torture that we’ve experienced year after year. Pittsburgh is a sports town, one of the best in the whole world, and it’s time that the Buccos finally take the next step in their history and get back to winning, and putting the Steel City back on the map as a great baseball town. We need an owner that believes in winning, one that believes in spending money to make money. If this were to happen, immediately the heavens would sing, the sun would shine, and the Jolly Roger will be raised! Too much? Well, that’s why it’s a wish.

There’s plenty to be thankful for this holiday season, but of course it never hurts to wish for just a little bit more. 2025 is on the horizon, and there’s a lot to look forward to from Pittsburgh’s ball club. In the meantime, I hope everyone receives that one gift they’ve had their eyes on, and I hope everyone takes the some time off to spend with family and friends. Merry Christmas and happy holidays from the Bucs Dugout Staff.
