The Pirates’ utility man shined all year, no matter where he was in the field.
Just a season after third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes was the recipient of the Gold Glove Award for his defensive efforts at third base, Jared Triolo is now a National League finalist for the award as a utility player.
Triolo was set to have a breakout year after finishing 2023 hot at the plate and primed to be an everyday starter in 2024. Of course though, that idea did not go exactly as it was planned out. Triolo did make the Opening Day start as the Pirates’ second-baseman, but with his own inconsistencies coupled with other’s injuries and call-ups, he found himself in and out of the lineup and at multiple positions. It wasn’t the prettiest year for the 26-year old utility man, but his body of work defensively did speak volumes.
Primarily playing at third and second base, Triolo committed just three errors across through 1,010 2⁄3 innings. His six defensive runs saved ranked third among the team, behind Michael A. Taylor and Hayes. In 119 appearances this season, few on the team were as consistent defensively as Triolo, and when Hayes ended up on the IL, he played great filling in at third base.

Triolo may also be a prime candidate for the Pirates’ first base position come next season, as he was solid there as well. He had one out above average while at first, while also having a fielding run value of 1 across 41 innings.
Major League Baseball extended the Gold Glove Award to players who see action at multiple positions back in 2022. Brendan Donovan of the Cardinals and Kike Hernandez of the Dodgers are the other finalists in the NL. The winner will be announced on November 3.
