Paul Skenes didn’t have his best outing as the Pittsburgh Pirates lost to the St. Louis Cardinals.
Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Paul Skenes made history in his most recent start against the St. Louis Cardinals, but it wasn’t the right side of it.
Skenes surrendered five earned runs as the Pirates lost 5-3 to the Cardinals, missing an opportunity to grab a win with him on the mound.
Skenes spoke with reporters after the game about his performance.
“It’s not like they hit the ball into the river or anything like that,” Skenes told the Associated Press. “They just found some holes and I got behind in some counts and kind of let them get good swings off. Not going to sweat it. It is what it is.”
Skenes is getting back into the flow of things and his routine, and that means working with catcher Endy Rodriguez, who didn’t play with the big league club in 2024.
Skenes is excited about the progress he and Rodriguez have made in terms of their chemistry.
“We’re thinking very similarly. I don’t think I shook today,” Skenes said. “I’m a fan of the game that he called and that we called together. It just comes down to executing.”
Skenes is scheduled to make his next start on Monday when the Buccos are back at home against the Washington Nationals. In the meantime, the Pirates will take on the Cincinnati Reds for a three-game series on the road this weekend.
The first game of the series starts tomorrow at 6:40 p.m. ET on Sportsnet Pittsburgh.
