The Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Pirates could make sense for a potential trade.
The Pittsburgh Pirates have a lot of young arms in the rotation now with a few more coming along the way in the foreseeable future.
The Pirates are also in need of another bat, and they could look to the Boston Red Sox for some help.
Bleacher Report writer Zachary D. Rymer mentions Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas as a potential trade target for the Pirates, and Jared Jones as someone to watch for Boston.
“As for Casas, Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow has denied shopping him. Yet they reportedly offered him to Seattle at one point, and the door may not be completely closed on a trade possibility. … The Mariners still fit Casas on paper, as do pitching-rich teams like the Padres and Pittsburgh Pirates,” Rymer writes.
“Before they gobbled up Garrett Crochet, Walker Buehler and Patrick Sandoval, the Red Sox reportedly had talks with the Bucs about Jones at the winter meetings.
“This doesn’t necessarily mean that Jones, who impressed in spurts as a rookie in 2024, is available. Yet given their dire need for an impact bat (or two), the Bucs would be unwise to take him off the table entirely.
“The Red Sox still make some sense for Jones, but it’s easier to imagine clubs like the Orioles and Cubs subtracting from their hitting surpluses to get him.”
It’s possible that a Casas-for-Jones swap has been discussed by both sides, but it didn’t end up going anywhere. That being said, if these conversations have already happened, it may be more likely to take place once the season begins and these potential problems that need fixing are magnified.
