Perez, 33, signed with the Pirates this offseason after winning the 2023 World Series with the Texas Rangers. However, he hasn’t lived up to the hype, racking up an ERA of 5.20.
In 16 appearances with the Pirates this season, Perez is 2-5, which prompted the team to trade him to the San Diego Padres. In return, the team received 18-year-old Ronaldys Jimenez.
Jimenez pitched six innings in rookie ball this season, giving up just a single run and having batters hit just .100 against him. It’s an extremely small sample size for a very raw prospect, but the Pirates felt he was worth taking a shot on.
