The Bucs are slipping in the standings. Paul Skenes’ numbers are down. Is it time to close the book on 2024?
Welcome to SB Nation Reacts, a survey of fans across the MLB. Throughout the year we ask questions of the most plugged-in Pittsburgh Pirates fans and fans across the country. Sign up here to participate in the weekly emailed surveys.
The Pittsburgh Pirates are free falling in the standings. Currently on an eight-game losing streak, a previously playoff-contending team now sits last in their division.
Young pitching stud Paul Skenes is also on a bit of a slide (for him anyway), holding a 3.16 ERA since the All-Star Break. Still a good number, but obviously more human than we saw from him earlier.
Skenes’ velocity is also dropping. Hovering steadliy above 100 for most of June and July, he’s been around 98.6 for the end of July and August. Skenes tossed 74 pitches of 100mph plus over his first 10 starts, while having just four over his last five games.
This week’s question is, given all of that’s going on with the Bucs and with Skenes, is it time to shut down the young hurler for the season? Or would you like to see him work through it?
