The Steelers legend wants Fields back in 2025
The Steelers are running out of time if they want to bring back one of the two quarterbacks who were on the roster last season before they hit the open market. Both Justin Fields and Russell Wilson are set to be free agents next week when the new league year begins, and it’s been made pretty clear the Steelers would prefer to keep one of them. More so on that note, they would prefer to bring back Justin Fields. However, if they can’t get a deal done and he hits the open market, he will have suitors that are willing to pay him solid money that the Steelers may not want to match, which would then shift conversations back to Wilson.
The consensus among fans and media is that Fields is the best choice, and at least one Steelers legend agrees. Speaking on his podcast Footbahlin, Ben Roethlisberger says he would like to see Fields get a year
“I’d like to see what Fields could do in another year of that offense,” Roethlisberger said. “Whether you want to bring someone else in, let’s see what he can do in a second year of an offense. There’s some familiarity. He’s had a new system every year. He may be more comfortable. Obviously, we’re not taking into account contracts and all that kind of stuff. I’d like to see what Fields could do another year.”
We’ve talked at length for the last year about the talents that both Fields and Wilson possess. Fields is a dual-threat guy whose legs give the Steelers an added element that defenses need to be aware off, but Wilson gives you more with the deep ball. Fields makes sense in terms of being younger and giving him a season to show whether or not he can have a Baker Mayfield-esc year like Mayfield did in Tampa Bay in 2023, leading the Buccaneers to the playoffs and earning a three-year deal. And if he isn’t that guy, then at least you’d have pieces in place for whomever you draft in 2026.
