In a decision that will reshape their quarterback room heading into the 2025 NFL season, the Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly not going to bring back Russell Wilson next year. The move comes after Wilson spent just one season with the franchise, attempting to revive his career following an underwhelming stint with the Denver Broncos.
Breaking: Russell Wilson Will Not Be Back With Pittsburgh Steelers
Russell Wilson joined the Steelers ahead of the 2024 season after being released by the Broncos. Pittsburgh took a low-risk gamble on the veteran quarterback, signing him to a one-year, team-friendly deal. The Steelers hoped that he could provide stability under center. While Wilson flashed moments of his past brilliance, inconsistency plagued both his and the Steelers’ offense throughout the season.
Under offensive coordinator Arthur Smith, Wilson struggled to establish a rhythm in the passing game. He showed flashes of the brilliant deep ball he has had throughout his career. However, Wilson struggled with intermediate throws and with quick decisions. By the end of the year, it became clear that Wilson was not thelong-termm answer Pittsburgh had hoped for.
Steelers’ QB future now in question
With Wilson set to depart, the Steelers face major questions at the quarterback position. Former first-round pick Justin Fields remains on the roster, but he is also a free agent. The Steelers chose to start Wilson over Fields for the majority of the season. This somewhat shows the Steelers don’t have a lot of faith in Fields moving forward. Pittsburgh could explore the trade market, sign a free agent, or even look toward the 2025 NFL Draft for their next quarterback.
Since the Pittsburgh Steelers made the playoffs, they do not have a high draft pick to select a quarterback. The team will likely turn their attention to the trade market and free agency. Two names that could make a difference in Pittsburgh include Kirk Cousins and Sam Darnold. The careers of these two are going in opposite directions. However, both could be serviceable for the Steelers. Darnold is coming off of a career year with the Minnesota Vikings, including throwing for over 4,000 yards. Cousins is coming off of a disappointing season in Atlanta. He was benched during the season for rookie Michael Penix Jr. However, Cousins battled injuries all season and could be a good veteran option for the Steelers if the Falcons part ways with him.
Wilson’s NFL future uncertain
As for Wilson, his next destination remains unclear. After back-to-back underwhelming seasons in Denver and with the Steelers, Russell Wilson’s stock has taken a considerable hit. Wilson will now likely be searching for another short-term deal, likely as a backup.
There could be teams willing to take a chance on him, particularly those in need of an experienced veteran who can mentor a younger quarterback. Teams like the New England Patriots, Chicago Bears, or even back to the Denver Broncos could be potential landing spots. These franchise’s could use Wilson’s leadership in a backup role to help out their young quarterbacks. Drake Maye, Caleb Williams, and Bo Nix could all benefit from Wilson’s expertise going into next year.
