The Pittsburgh Steelers met with quarterback Russell Wilson on Friday and by all indications, it went really smoothly.
Josina Anderson of CBS Sports reported on Friday night that the meeting went “great” and that Wilson spent “hours” with offensive coordinator Arthur Smith.
He also reached out to current members of the team before visiting with the front office and coaching staff.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler then gave an update on where things stand during SportsCenter on Saturday.
“I’m hearing the Steelers interest in Wilson is real. I was told, ‘We don’t bring a veteran in unless we’re serious about signing them.’ The feeling out of the [NFL] Combine is they’re serious about Kenny Pickett being the starter, but they want to bring in competition,” Fowler said.
The Steelers want to bring in a free agent who can at least challenge for the starting quarterback position and Wilson would definitely do that. Heck, he might win the starting job before training camp even starts since he’d be an upgrade over Pickett.
If he does sign with the Steelers, he’d likely only be getting between $5M-7M. He’s already getting close to $40 million from the Broncos after he was cut this past week.
With free agency set to start next Wednesday, it won’t be long until Wilson makes his decision.
