According to Ryan Burr of the Big Ten Network, the Pittsburgh Steelers have reached out to the Jacksonville Jaguars to enquire about a trade for franchise quarterback Trevor Lawrence. The #1 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Lawrence signed a five-year, $275 million contract extension with Jacksonville before the 2024 season.
Trevor Lawrence Linked to Steelers in Rumored Trade
Burr followed up on his initial report by opining that Pittsburgh would probably be willing to trade their first and second-round picks in the upcoming 2025 NFL Draft for Lawrence. This seems like a light return for a franchise-caliber quarterback (though it was just Burr’s opinion, not a reported offer the Steelers made). However, the Jaguars are an organization in limbo right now, with a new head coach and no general manager. Couple that with the Steelers’ desire to find another franchise quarterback, it’s no shock they enquired about Lawrence.
Steelers would deal this years #1 & #2, but with draft in Pittsburgh next year I would be very surprised if next years #1 is even on the table. https://t.co/g7VswZYwOn

Pittsburgh enters the offseason with no potential starting quarterbacks on their roster. Justin Fields and Russell Wilson, who started all of the Steelers games in 2024, are both free agents. While there has been no rock-solid reporting, the sentiment is that Pittsburgh will not keep both Wilson and Fields, and Fields seems more likely to be re-signed.
Given their lack of direction and stability at quarterback, general manager Omar Khan is likely calling and inquiring about all kinds of quarterbacks. Jacksonville might have no interest in dealing with Lawrence, and Khan’s inquiry might not have gotten very far. But it would be negligent for Khan to not be checking in with every team about potentially dealing with their quarterback.
The Steelers enter 2024 at a bit of a crossroads. They can either attempt to compete with the roster they have, in which case acquiring a quarterback like Matthew Stafford would make sense. Or, they could look to rebuild, a scenario where re-signing and starting Justin Fields is the way to go. However, Lawrence is a quarterback who is a fit in either scenario. He is good enough to win now, and he’s still young with plenty of years ahead of him.
