We’re now less than two weeks away from the NFL Draft and the Pittsburgh Steelers are currently rostering just two quarterbacks — Mason Rudolph and Skylar Thompson. Their pursuit of Aaron Rodgers remains a mystery on both sides.
Heading into the offseason, many believed GM Omar Khan wanted to retain Justin Fields, who displayed growth last season in black and gold. Fields started the first six games of the season last year for the Steelers and went 4-2 but was benched for Russell Wilson leading into week 7.
Fields reportedly had an offer from Pittsburgh on the table but instead opted to join the New York Jets. He was asked about the benching this week by ESPN, and stated he doesn’t take things personally.
“At the end of the day, I was just excited at what the Jets had going on here with Aaron Glenn and with the coaching staff, so it didn’t really have anything to do with Pittsburgh,” said Fields.
Of course, money talks as well. Fields will get 30 million guaranteed over two seasons. Likely, the Steelers weren’t willing to match that number.
So, the quarterback search continues, and ultimately, this could be a decision that the Steelers regret. There aren’t many options on the table. It’s starting to feel like Rodgers or a rookie quarterback, which I can’t imagine was what they planned heading into a critical offseason.
