After spending seven seasons in the NFL, fullback Derek Watt has decided to call it a career.
Watt, 31, was selected by the Chargers in the sixth round of the 2016 NFL Draft. He spent four years with the organization before signing with the Steelers during the 2020 offseason.
On Tuesday morning, Watt released a beautiful letter regarding his retirement.
“Just a kid from Pewaukee, WI who had the chance to live out his childhood dream of being drafted and playing in the NFL,” Watt wrote. “And now, it is with great honor and gratitude that I officially announce my retirement and the end of my career… A career that ended up being about so much more than just the game that I love. The 7 years, with 2 great organizations, 110 career games, and lifelong friendship and memories that I’ve been fortunate enough to make have been nothing short of amazing.
“I am retiring from this incredible game feeling full of gratitude and satisfaction knowing that I gave it my all each and every day. Never took any shortcuts and achieved so many of my goals along the way. It was all worth it.”
Derek’s older brother, former NFL star J.J. Watt, had a heartfelt reaction to this retirement letter.
“Incredible career. Incredible man. Incredible brother,” J.J. replied on X. “Couldn’t possibly be more proud.”
In 110 career games, Derek Watt had 18 receptions for 178 yards and a touchdown. He also had 71 yards and two scores on 29 attempts.
We’re wishing Watt all the best as he gets ready to enter the next chapter of his life.
