Russell Wilson was not an active participant in practice today as the Pittsburgh Steelers training camp kicks into high gear.
Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin revealed that Wilson is dealing with tightness in his calf. Tomlin also made it clear that Wilson’s intent was to play through the injury, but he made the executive decision to keep him from aggravating it.
As a result, he considers Wilson “day-to-day” with the injury, per ProFootballTalk.
With Wilson out, former Chicago Bears first-round pick Justin Fields got the nod in practice and led the first-team offense while Wilson watched.
That’s certainly big news for Fields, who is probably eager to get reps with the first team in the event that he’s thrust into action at some point during the 2024 season.
But for Steelers fans expecting (or just hoping) that Wilson is going to be as good as he was with the Seahawks back in the day, it’s certainly worrying. To be picking up a non-contact injury mere days after the start of training camp is not something that bodes well for the rest of the season.
Is this just a small setback for Russell Wilson or is it a sign of things to come?
