Against all odds and with one of the league’s worst offenses, Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin led the team to yet another year without a losing record and even secured a wild card bid in the process. While some fans believe he’s got to go, the brass are ready to give him an extension.
On Monday, the Steelers announced that they have signed Tomlin to a three-year contract extension. The deal keeps Tomlin in Pittsburgh through the 2027 season.
“Mike Tomlin’s leadership and commitment to the Steelers have been pivotal to our success during his first 17 years as head coach,” Steelers owner Art Rooney II said in a statement. “Extending his contract for three more years reflects our confidence in his ability to guide the team back to winning playoff games and championships, while continuing our tradition of success.”
But while the Steelers may feel that Tomlin is deserving of a contract from 17 straight seasons without a losing campaign, some don’t like that Tomlin is continuing to stay with the team after years of stagnant offense. Others believe that Tomlin is still elite and won’t go anywhere so long as his teams are winning:
“pittsburgh teams and extending coaches that are past their expiration dates. name a more iconic duo,” one user wrote.
“And some of you thought Tomlin’s seat was getting warm. It’s the coldest chair in the NFL. He’s not going anywhere. #Steelers,” another declared.
“Three more years of 9-win seasons baby, let’s go,” a third joked.
Will Tomlin justify the extension with another trip to the Super Bowl in the next few years?
