The Steelers have their eyes on the Super Bowl champion.
The Pittsburgh Steelers will be one of the quarterback-needy teams to watch at the beginning of the new league year. With Skylar Thompson as the only quarterback under contract, the Steelers need to figure out who will be their quarterback in 2025, and we now know at least one name they are interested in bringing in from another organization.
In his latest edition of “MMQB Takeaways,” Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated notes that the Steelers are one of several teams who have made it known that they are interested in trading for Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford.
“The teams you’d suspect would have their hat in the ring have, indeed, thrown their hats in the ring,” Breer writes. “The New York Giants, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, Las Vegas Raiders and others have shown interest.”
The Steelers, of course, made multiple moves for quarterbacks last season, signing Russell Wilson and trading for Justin Fields just days later. Stafford would be a clear upgrade over both, but also comes with the caveat that he is 37 years old. That said, he is still one of the best quarterbacks in the league and was within mere plays of overcoming a fourth-quarter deficit to lead the less-talented Rams over the Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round of the playoffs.
Should Stafford be on board for multiple years, it’s a move the Steelers are understandably interested in making, as they have yet to find a franchise quarterback since Ben Roethlisberger retired.
