Is Russell Wilson being carried?
The Pittsburgh Steelers are coming off their first loss since Week 5 when they lost to the Dallas Cowboys. Pittsburgh lost to the Cleveland Browns on Thursday night, and now another divisional game against the Cincinnati Bengals awaits them in Week 13.
And while coming off a loss, it is clear that the Steelers love Russell Wilson. So much so that Dianna Russini of The Athletic is reporting that Pittsburgh plans to re-sign the future Hall of Famer. That said, a former MVP called him out earlier last week.
Speaking on his podcast 4th and 1, Cam Newton said Wilson hasn’t done anything overtly impressive this season.
“Russell Wilson is being carried by the Pittsburgh Steelers,” Newton said. “I’m looking at his situation and I’m saying he’s not doing anything different. What alarms me was this statistic that is like ‘Wilson is undefeated, the Steelers are 4-0’- who have they played? They played the Jets, the Giants, a still-on-the-bubble Washington Commanders team, and they played the Ravens. By the way, Chris Boswell kicked all [their] points [against Baltimore].”
Wilson currently ranks 16th in EPA per play, and 33rd in success rate amongst all quarterbacks who have played at least 175 snaps. However, he has is also sixth in air yards and he has thrown seven touchdowns to just one interception.
