Russell Wilson’s arrival in Pittsburgh reportedly has a lot to do with what the Giants told him during one of their free agency meetings.
Per Jeff Howe of The Athletic, New York “didn’t make any promises about playing time” and couldn’t guarantee that Wilson would play ahead of Daniel Jones if he signed with the team.
The G-Men seem to be signaling that they’d like to give Jones another shot at the starting job after coming back from injury and Howe notes that he is the “expected” starter.
Jones is coming off a dismal year that saw him go 1-5 with just two touchdowns and six interceptions before suffering a season-ending ACL tear.
Despite his mostly poor play, the Giants decided to lock him into a massive four-year, $160 million extension in 2023 instead of using the franchise tag on him and trying to allocate resources elsewhere.
Having the former No. 6 pick on the roster this season means that he’ll count as a $47.1 million hit against the team’s cap.
New York brought in ex-Broncos/Seahawks QB Drew Lock in free agency to give Jones some sort of competition. However quarterback remains a huge question mark for Big Blue as they enter the 2024 campaign.
