Justin Fields, New York Jets, Agree to Contract
After spending the first three years of his career in Chicago, the Bears traded Justin Fields to the Pittsburgh Steelers after landing the first-overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft. Brought on to be Russell Wilson’s backup, Fields started the first six games of the season while the one-time Super Bowl champion worked his way back from a calf injury. While on the field, the quarterback guided the team to a 4-2 record while completing 65.8% of his passes for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns, and one interception while adding another 289 yards and five scores on the ground.
Fields originally entered the league as a first-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Selected by the Chicago Bears, the Ohio State product began his career backing up veteran Andy Dalton. However, he didn’t need long to win the starting job, as he appeared in 12 games while making 10 starts. While on the field, the quarterback completed 58.9% of his passes for 1,870 yards, seven touchdowns, and 10 interceptions with most of his damage coming on the ground. This wasn’t enough to save Matt Nagy’s job, and the team hired Matt Eberflus in 2022.
The Ohio State product showed some signs of life under the new leadership. Starting and appearing in 15 games, Justin Fields completed 60.4% of his passes for 2,242 yards, 17 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. Unfortunately, this wasn’t enough to make the team competitive, as Chicago went 3-12 with Fields under center.
The Bears acquired wide receiver D.J. Moore in the offseason, and the veteran helped bring out the best in Justin Fields during the third year of his contract. The quarterback set career highs in completion percentage (61.4%), yards (2,562), and interceptions (nine) while throwing 16 touchdowns and leading the team to a 5-8 record when on the field.
