The Pittsburgh Steelers revamped their quarterback room in a major way this offseason, acquiring Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.
Wilson signed a one-year, $1.2 million contract with the Steelers. He was willing to take such a cheap deal because the Denver Broncos owe him $38 million this year.
It has been heavily reported over the past week that Wilson is viewed as the starter heading into training camp. However, Pittsburgh won’t be afraid to make a change if necessary.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Steelers will have no problem releasing Wilson if he’s thoroughly outplayed by Fields in camp.
“The fact of the matter is they have the luxury of letting this play out during camp and doing whatever is best for that football team,” Schefter said, via Steeler Nation. “There is no commitment, obligation, loyalty to anyone of these guys. They didn’t pay very much for either one of them. I even had an executive say if Justin Fields outplayed him during training camp, they could see them moving on from him before the season.”
Steelers coach Mike Tomlin reportedly told Fields that Wilson will be the starter. That doesn’t mean the former Ohio State star is permanently stuck as the No. 2 option on the depth chart.
When it comes to potential, Fields has the necessary traits to be a starting quarterback in the NFL. Maybe, just maybe, he’ll reach his ceiling in Pittsburgh.
