Now that the Steelers have their quarterback room settled for the 2024 season, they’re apparently going to address the other major need on their roster: Wide receiver.
According to Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan, the Steelers have been looking into swinging a deal for San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk. Per the report, the Steelers have shown interest but would need to work out a sign-and-trade to bring him into the fold.
“Sources: The Steelers have looked into 49ers WR Brandon Aiyuk. He’s entering the last year of his contract. Steelers would have to execute a sign and trade. But they’ve shown interest,” Fillipponi wrote.
Aiyuk is heading into a contract year but is coming off one of his best seasons to date. He had 75 receptions for a career-high 1,342 yards along with seven touchdowns, leading the 49ers in all three categories en route to All-Pro honors in 2023.
However, the 49ers appear to have balked at giving Aiyuk a long-term extension, opening the door for another team to make a trade offer for him.
Aiyuk was the No. 25 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft and struggled to make a big impact for the team in his first two seasons.
But amid the ascension of Brock Purdy, Aiyuk has become one of the quarterback’s preferred targets. He had three receptions in each of the team’s playoff games this past year as well.
Will the Steelers try to make a move on Brandon Aiyuk, or will someone else give him a long-term deal instead?
