Pittsburgh Steelers running back Najee Harris will be playing for a new contract this fall.
According to multiple reports, the Steelers have declined the fifth-year option on Harris’ rookie contract. This will make him an unrestricted free agent after this season.
The fifth-year option for Harris was worth $6.79 million. Declining this option could end up costing the Steelers in the long run, but they seem more than OK with taking that chance.
Harris, a former first-round pick from Alabama, had 1,035 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 255 carries last season. He also hauled in 29 passes for 170 yards.
Since entering the NFL in 2021, Harris has racked up 3,269 yards on the ground and 866 yards through the air.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter said the Steelers are open to a new deal with Harris. That’s probably something they’ll visit after the season is over.
While this decision may sting for Harris, he’ll have plenty of motivation heading into the regular season. If he plays his cards right, he could earn a massive payday in free agency.
Harris wasn’t the only member of the Steelers who had their fifth-year option declined this Thursday. Dual-threat quarterback Justin Fields was also informed that he’s entering a contract year.
