It’s down to two
Earlier in the week, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter listed the Steelers has one of three teams in the realistic playing field for a potential Matthew Stafford trade. However, the Rams and Stafford agreed to a restructured contract that will keep the future Hall of Fame quarterback in Los Angeles with the Rams.
Appearing on Pardon My Take, Schefter was asked who the Steelers quarterback will be in 2025, and he said it’s down to the two options that were on the team last year.
“Steelers next quarterback — Russell Wilson or Justin Fields,” Schefter said. “One of them will be back. One of them I expect will be back.”
Schefter was then asked which one he thinks it will be, and he said Wilson.

This backs up everything Omar Khan and the Steelers brass have said this offseason – they’d prefer to keep Wilson or Fields. And while they of course had interest in Stafford, that is something that felt unexpected and if there was any way they could have gotten him, they likely would have made the move. However, from the moment the season ended, Art Rooney and Omar Khan have both said that the preferred option would be to keep Wilson or Fields for 2025 – now it just comes down to which one it will be.
