Former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward will return to coaching college football this fall.
According to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Arizona State has agreed to a deal with Ward that’ll make him the program’s wide receivers coach. An official announcement should be made in the near future.
Ward, 48, started his coaching career with the Steelers in 2017 as an intern. He then joined the New York Jets as an offensive assistant in 2019.
In 2021, Florida Atlantic hired Ward as its wide receivers coach. Two years later, he was named the head coach of the San Antonio Brahmas.
During his only season as an XFL head coach, Ward owned a 3-7 record. He resigned from his position last December.
Ward is still relatively young for a football coach, so it’s possible his new role at Arizona State will lead to a bigger and better opportunity.
At the very least, Ward should be able to help out the wide receiver room for the Sun Devils. We’re talking about a former player with over 12,000 career receiving yards and two Super Bowl championships.
Arizona State fans, are you excited about this hire?
