You can take a wide receiver away from Patrick Mahomes but not many of them bring along the production they had with him.
Around a week ago the Pittsburgh Steelers acquired wide receiver/tight end Izaiah Gathings after he was waived by the Chiefs earlier in the month. But his stay with the Steelers was very short.
According to Harrison Reno of Arrowhead Report, the Steelers have released Gathings as of Wednesday.
As a college player at MTSU, Gathings made 84 receptions for 861 yards and three touchdowns over two seasons. He went undrafted in the 2023 NFL Draft.
Gathings started off his rookie campaign with the New York Jets but was released and ultimately spent the year on the Chiefs’ practice squad. He is coming off a rookie season where he did not make any receptions with the Chiefs. Though he still got his ring when the team won the Super Bowl.
Wide receiver was arguably the biggest position of weakness for the Kansas City Chiefs going into the offseason. It arguably got better after they drafted Texas speedster Xavier Worthy in the ensuing NFL Draft. Nevertheless, the fact Gathings wasn’t deemed good enough to stay a part of it might be a turnoff to some NFL teams.
Will another team give Gathings a chance this offseason?
