Dan Rooney is making it no secret that he’d love for his team to play another game in Ireland.
Speaking to BBC.com, the presumed Steelers successor opened up about wanting to bring Pittsburgh’s brand back to the Emerald Isle.
“It’s been a goal from the start, being able to pursue an opportunity to play a live game in front of the Irish fans,” Rooney said. “We are working with the NFL on that and we’re looking forward to seeing what’s coming.”
The Steelers last ventured to the country for a preseason game back in the late ’90s and he says he sees “an appetite for our game” in his family’s homeland.
“We’re awaiting some of their findings and we have told them we would love to get to the island to play a game some day,” Rooney continued. “It’s an exciting future ahead. It would be special no matter where we played it. Croke Park hosted it in 1997 and that is a special venue, but that’s really in the hands of the NFL.”
Ireland has regularly been mentioned as a country that could host NFL games in the near future. But this year the league will travel to England, Germany and Brazil for a trio of regular season matchups.
