The Pittsburgh Steelers have a pair of talented running backs in Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren, but they’ve explored other options this offseason.
Pittsburgh signed former Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals back Jonathan Ward at the start of OTAs, and they’ve now added another running back to the roster.
La’Mical Perine joined the team’s 90-man roster on Thursday, becoming the second rusher to sign with the team during this period of the offseason.
Perine joins Ward, Harris, Warren and veteran Cordarrelle Patterson, who the Steelers also added this year.
Perine was taken in the fourth round of the 2020 draft after a standout career at Florida.
He led the Gators in rushing in three of his four college seasons, and was also named the MVP of the 2019 Orange Bowl, where he ran for 138 yards and added a pair of touchdowns to help his team win.
The former Gator has won two Super Bowl championships in his career, both with the Kansas City Chiefs over the last two seasons.
Aside from the Jets and the Chiefs, Perine has also spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins after signing to their respective practice squads.
The Steelers are looking to make it back to the postseason after losing in the Wild Card round last year to the Buffalo Bills.
They’ve added two new quarterbacks in Russell Wilson and Justin Fields, while former first round pick Kenny Pickett was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles.
It’s a season of change in Pittsburgh, and Perine will be hoping that he can stick around as one of the several new faces head coach Mike Tomlin and general manager Omar Khan are adding to the team.
